Oh my goodness, I can’t even with this one haha How amazing does this look!? This is absolute durian heaven! For those of you thinking, “What the heck is durian?” Let me first explain my love affair with the King of Fruits.
Several years ago, I went to an Asian Market (which is where you can find durian) and picked up my first durian. I brought it home and wow was it STINKY! In Asia they actually have “No Durian” signs in places like trains because of how potent the odor is. Durian contains many different pods and each pod has its own unique flavor. Even the flesh in the same pod by vary depending on if it’s from the top, middle or bottom of the durian which I find to be pretty rad but I did not know this when I purchased my first durian. When I was ready to open the fruit in my home, I felt for the soft seams along the the middle of the pod to open it. Some durians open easier than others be careful not to prick yourself on the spikes. You can also use a knife if you wish to open it. When picking out a durian I like to look for a golden brown color but there are many varieties that are green as well. I haven’t seen them in Asian Markets though.
Once I opened the durian, I’m not going to lie, it looked like something in an alien movie. I had my first bite and it tasted like delicious almonds! I had another bite and it tasted disgusting. I absolutely hated it. I was discouraged and thought, maybe I’ll make a smoothie with it? Terrible idea. I ended up wasting the entire thing.
It wasn’t until I went to The Woodstock Fruit Festival (www.woodstockfruitfestival.com $100 off using code “LivePure”) in 2014 one year later that my true love for durian blossomed into an obsession. At the festival we have durian almost every night. On the first night of the durian party, I wasn’t so sure about it after my failed experience but I was down to try it again. It was okay, I didn’t like it but I didn’t hate it either. And then… the next day… it happened. I woke up the next morning literally craving it. That’s all I wanted to eat was durian. That night when the durian came out, it was pure magic. It was probably one of the best durians I’ve ever had in my life so far. It carried the notes of strawberry caramel that kept me in ecstasy lol Each durian and individual pod has its own characteristic flavor that you just need to try for yourself. Some taste like chocolate, sweet cream, caramel, almond, cheesecake, toffee, coffee, oh my goodness they can be soooooo creamy! But then you can get ones that taste like dirty soccer cleats and onions LOL I will say this, the smell is not a clear representation as to how they taste if you get a good one.
Durian has an amazing source of folate, vitamin C, thiamin, tryptophan, potassium, iron, copper, vitamin B, energy and fiber. The king of fruits is excellent for improving muscle strength and blood pressure, bowel movements and skin health. It also supports the nervous and immune systems, and enhances red blood cell formation.
The key to making this ice cream tasting amazing even if you don’t pick the best durian is the adding all the dates, vanilla, cinnamon and all the yummy toppings! I made this for my friend Jess who has never had durian in her life and she absolutely was in love with it which made me super happy she enjoyed her first with me
- 2 Large pods or 3 small ones
- 7 Medjool Dates (pitted)
- 1/4 teaspoon Vanilla Bean Powder
- A couple dashes of Cinnamon
*** For the toppings I used strawberries, cacao nibs and some of Jem’s raw maca cinnamon sprouted almond butter (amazing!!) You can add any toppings you want like shredded coconut, sprout buckwheat groats, bananas, etc…
- Blend the durian and dates together in a high speed blender and place into a container.
- Add in vanilla, cinnamon and mix. You can actually eat it like this with toppings as a pudding but for the ice cream, place into the freezer for several hours.
- Once slightly frozen, use an ice cream scooper or spoon to place durian into a bowl. Add toppings and ENJOY!! Xx
