Did you know we are the only species on the planet that drinks milk from another animal?  We are designed to drink our mother’s milk during the early years of our lives to nurture proper growth but, like ALL other living creatures, we too should stop consuming milk after our bodies are developed.  It is no surprise lactose intolerant allergies are so common; we live in a society where dairy is present in almost every meal.  A staggering 75% of the world population is unable to properly digest milk and other dairy products (source).  Due to its saturated fat content, dairy is linked to prostate cancer, ovarian cancer, and heart disease .  Cows milk can also be loaded with contaminants such as pathogens, pesticides, hormones, and antibiotics.

Interestingly, it has been found that countries with lowest rates of dairy and calcium consumption (such as in Africa and Asia) actually have have the lowest rates of osteoporosis (source).  Numerous leafy greens – like collard greens, spinach, broccoli, kale, seaweeds, brussel sprouts, bok choy, peas, and even rhubarb – have more than enough calcium to fulfill your daily needs.  Almond milk is an easy, healthy alternative for dairy lovers everywhere and is loaded with plenty of magnesium, selenium, manganese, and vitamin E.  You can add dates, vanilla beans, cinnamon, raw cacao, strawberries . . . anything you can think of!  Check out the recipe below!

(Bonus: once the milk is made, you can use the almond pulp to make raw cookies or crackers.  YUM! :D)

Recipe

  • 1 cup Raw almonds soaked overnight or for at least 8-12 hours.  Drain.  Peel the skins.
  • 3 cups Filtered water.
  • Nut bag.

Optional to add:

Dates (I like to use 5 soft medjool ones), maple syrup, carob, cacao, vanilla bean powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, strawberries or other fresh fruit, acai berry powder, etc… The combinations are endless!

  1. Blend all ingredients together in a high speed blender until smooth.  The milk will become frothy and bubbly.
  2. Pour mixture into the nut bag and squeeze until the almond pulp becomes completely dry.
  3. And there you have it! Enjoy! Xx
